Abstract

Most of the materials that surround us are porous, meaning they have spaces that allow substances to be stored. These gaps, called pores, come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are found in both natural and synthetic materials. Among synthetic materials, we have the fascinating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are metal-organic structures that form networks in two or three dimensions with ordered spatial shapes and crystalline appearance. Their chemical composition gives them unique properties such as high surface area, physical, chemical and thermal stability, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. MOFs can be used to store gases, separate molecules, catalyze reactions and, surprisingly, treat certain diseases. This scientific outreach article provides an overview of porous materials, particularly MOFs, from their structure and chemical composition to their latest and most promising applications. It is intended for both specialized and non-specialized audiences.
